Learning to Become More Critical Of Life
Everyone has their own responsibilities in life for which they work and everyone also has their goals and desires for which they strive to improve themselves every day. However, most people would find themselves often drifting along the monotonous flow of their life without ever trying to make a break for whatever they actually think is the most important for them. The reason for that is simply because people have burdened themselves with too many things they think they should be doing be doing while in reality, these things are only holding them back for achieving what they really want. As long as you keep thinking that even your plethora of hobbies are needed in your life to provide balance to your work, you will never really find time to do something else. Even worse, you will neither enjoy your work nor your hobbies if you keep thinking that you should be doing something else in life as well. What you need is to evaluate your life and make rational decisions towards reaching a meaningful life.
That is where critical thinking comes into play. Critical thinking can be defined as the objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form a judgement. In simpler terms, you should evaluate the situation for what it is and think about the relevant pros and cons for each scenario as well. Then, you can prioritize to work on the most important thing first and come down the list accordingly. The goal is not to just help you evaluate the current state of your life, but also how to improve it by cutting down on some things and re-arranging the rest to make space for new goals in your life. Doing the analysis of such things varies from person to person as everyone lives a different life. Only you can evaluate things most accurately and implement correct decisions.
Being Critical of your responsibilities
To start with, you should first identify the things that can be considered a responsibility for you. These should be the things for which you are accountable for or rather for which someone else is depending on you. Generally speaking, your responsibilities take priority over your long-term goals and your hobbies. So, it is reasonable to first identify them as such. Once you do identify them, you should evaluate their impact on your life to see their cost for you. Then, you can also consider whether a particular responsibility is indeed yours to begin with or was it latter acquired by you for some reason and never let go afterwards. Maybe it is a shared responsibility which has no point in being shared with you in the first place. Your goal should be to declutter from the initial list of responsibilities as much as possible so that you end up with only those responsibilities which are critical for your life i.e. your critical responsibilities.
Being Critical of your decisions
Every person is responsible for their own life so naturally they should be also accountable for their decisions as well. What it actually means is that you should always make a decision after careful analysis and evaluation of the facts that you are provided with in order to reach the optimal decision. Consider, for example, a scenario where you are making a choice to buy a car for you and your family. Sure, you can ask and receive suggestions from other people based on their experiences but ultimately, you will be the one who will have to buy the car and be held responsible for making that choice. Maybe someone will recommend a Ferrari to you and sing praises for it but, if you have a bigger family, it will only lead to problems later on. In this case, can you really blame the person who recommended you the Ferrari because he was a single after all?
It is always your choice to accept a suggestion or not. It is also your job to consider all the related aspects which other may not be privy to. In short, while evaluating any suggestion, you should first consider what argument the person is trying to make and then try to figure out how it might be different based on your life conditions.
Conclusion
All in all, the life you should be leading is the one where you should be always making conscious decisions to lead it in the direction where you want it to go. Not only should you evaluate your existing life situation and figure out how to improve it but, you should always be more aware of any of your future decisions as well. After all, anything that is good or bad cannot be known to you beforehand and you can only make the best rational decision based on the facts that you are provided with. This requires you to put in the extra effort to always analyse and evaluate each choice and their consequential scenarios first before making that choice. Because, one thing for sure is that you will be the one held accountable for the outcome at the end since it is your life and your decision.
