Organizing yourself

Organizing Your Life

The end goal of understanding your responsibility in life is to understand that you are in control of taking yourself to a better position. This change will not happen overnight and nor will it occur without hard work. But, this change is still needed for you to reach your destination. However, even if you do understand that you are responsible for your own life and that you need to move to a better place in life, it doesn’t mean that you will know how to start doing it. That is where organizing yourself in your day to day life will play a major factor.

Organizing your life may seem like a daunting task at first but remember that organizing your life is not something complex, rather it is one of the most easiest things you can do in life. And that is because everything you need to organize in your life can be simply broken down to most basic of things and taken care of independently for the most part. In order to achieve success, you only need to work on one part and consistently make progress over time without regressing. The smaller the part it is, the easier it is for you to stick to it. So, even if you do feel like you can start with a bigger aspect of your life, remember that it will be much harder to maintain consistency for it and also that it is okay for you to not see certain order in your life at the very start. The focus is on making consistent progress without regressing.

An example of a simple aspect of your life that you can organize right now is to make up your bed every single morning as soon as you wake up. In contrast, a relatively bigger component would be to go to the gym every morning at a specific time. While the latter would appear to provide much more order and improvement in your life, it will also consume a lot of mental strength from you to maintain consistency. Your mental strength is not infinite(though it can continue to gradually grow indefinitely) so, the more you spend it on this, the lesser you will have left to tackle the rest of your day. This might cause you to take breaks from your newly developed habit and eventually leave it altogether.
A better approach would be to make your bed daily and learn to make it a part of your life so that you do not feel like it is a task you are forcing yourself to do but rather it is a task that you naturally have to do in life. Then, you can take small steps like changing your sleep schedule little by little to wake up earlier until you reach that specific time and then maybe go from doing simple exercises to proper training sessions. You have to decide the simpler components for yourself as each aspect you are organizing may be different then everyone else’s. Remember to go for as simple break down as you can so it doesn’t take much mental fortitude from you to maintain consistency and then gradually add new things once it becomes a part of your life.

Which Parts should you focus on?

Broadly speaking, you need to focus only on two major aspects in order to organize your life to improve upon it. These are,

  1. Organizing Your Goals
  2. Organizing Your Habits

Organizing Your goals

Since you want to being order to your life by organizing it, so you can gradually make progress to move to a better place in life, you should first decide on what your goal is. That is to say where this better place is and what you need to achieve in order to get there.
The final place in life can be an amalgam of different things like earning a stable income, owning a house or improving your physique etc and there is no need for it to be fixed as well. You can always add more things to it or modify the existing ones  as your life progresses. That is because you seldom know what the top of the mountain is like when you have just started to climb on it. Maybe you will see a beautiful view or maybe another hill to climb.
Even if the final place is prone to changes in the long run, the goals you need to focus on and organize are the ones you get by breaking down a certain aspect of your final place. For example, to work on the aspect of improving your physique, the above mentioned breakdown to go the the gym every morning might work. Or if you want to earn a stable income, you need to learn a skill that is in demand. You might start with just researching that and then deciding to take up a course on that and completing it step by step.

Organizing your habits

Even if you do have a clear goal you are working towards or if you are still in the process of figuring it out, you can always start to work on organizing your daily habits. While these habits may appear to be small and harmless on the surface, but in reality, these habits are constituting your current life. If you want to change your life for the better, then you certainly need to work on changing your habits for the better as well.

In order to start, you need to again follow the breakdown approach to find the most simplest of the habit and try to change it with a better habit. To follow the above example, this could be just something as simple as making up your bed in the morning instead of leaving it as a mess. It can also be something like making preparations for the first thing you will do in the morning like organizing your books and notes if you have to take classes in the morning or tidying up your shoes and clothes if you have a job interview/presentation etc.

Conclusion:

Hopefully, you now understand that although organizing your life may seem like a very convoluted task, it is actually just you making changes in your life at the most basic scale so that you end up with something better(even if it is only a little better than before).
The one thing I will emphasize is for you to understand that consistency will bring about a lot of wonderful results and these small improvements will keep adding up just like compound interest, until you will achieve that final better place you set out for. You just have to give it some time and keep making steady progress in the smallest possible intervals and I will see you on the other side!
